Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
1Wood glue (water-resistant D3)
1Wood paints or acrylic paints

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. Engrave the fractions, cut the divisions with the 2 mm end mill, then cut out strips, frame and bottom. Secure the sheet with double-sided tape.
  3. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
  4. Lightly break the edges with sandpaper (grit 120, then 240) and remove burrs.

Assembly and final touches

  1. Glue the frame onto the bottom. Paint each strip in its own colour so the denominators can be recognised even without reading.
  2. Tasks: how many quarters make a half? Which pieces add up to exactly one whole?
