Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.
Carving and finishing
- Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
- Cut out all 32 profiles with their centre slots; for each piece one profile has the slot at the top, the other at the bottom.
- Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
- Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.
Assembly and final touches
- Slot two identical profiles together crosswise until foot and head are flush, and secure with a drop of glue.
- For the second colour mill the same sheet again and stain or paint the pieces dark. The board from the template “Draughts and chess board” goes with it.
- Finally oil, wax or varnish; for toys use oils or varnishes that are saliva-resistant according to EN 71-3.
