Materials and accessories
| Qty | Part |
|---|---|
| 1 | Wood glue (water-resistant D3) |
| 4 | Stainless steel screws 3.5 × 30 mm |
Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.
Carving and finishing
- Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
- First the entrance hole, mortises and holes, then cut out all parts. For plywood thicker than 9 mm use an end mill with 17 mm cutting length.
- Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
- Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.
Assembly and final touches
- Fit bottom and side walls between the gables; the tenons come out flush on the outside. Glue with waterproof glue and clamp.
- Only screw the roof onto the gables with four stainless screws so it can be taken off for cleaning in autumn. The wider roof panel overlaps at the ridge.
- Do not add a perch, it helps cats and martens. Hang it 2 to 3 m high with the entrance facing east or south-east. Hole size: 26 to 28 mm for blue tits, 32 mm for great tits and sparrows.
