Trammel of Archimedes

Preview of the CNC template “Trammel of Archimedes”

Two sliders run in a cross of grooves, an arm connects them and guides the pen: this draws ellipses of any shape, for frames, table tops or maths lessons. The grooves are formed by four glued-on quarters.

Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
1Beech dowel rod 8 mm
1Wood glue (water-resistant D3)

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. Engrave the markings, mill the holes, then cut out base, four quarters, two sliders and the arm.
  3. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
  4. Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.

Assembly and final touches

  1. Glue the four quarters flush onto the corners of the base, using a slider as spacer: this creates the two grooves in a cross. The sliders must glide easily.
  2. Glue a short dowel into each slider and put the arm on loosely. The distance from the pen to the first slider is one semi-axis, to the second the other.
  3. Lay the base on paper, put the pencil through the hole at the end of the arm and guide it once round.
