Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
1Wood glue (water-resistant D3)
1Wood oil, wax or clear varnish

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. Engrave hour lines and numbers, carve the slot, then cut out the dial and gnomon. Set the latitude of your location first (Hamburg 53.5°, Berlin 52.5°, Cologne 51°, Munich 48°, Zurich 47.5°).
  3. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
  4. Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.

Assembly and final touches

  1. Glue the gnomon into the slot with its tip pointing south; it must stand exactly vertical.
  2. Set the dial level (spirit level) and turn the centre line exactly north: at true noon (in Central Europe around 12:10 to 12:40 standard time, depending on location) the shadow falls on the 12.
  3. The dial shows local apparent time. For clock time: add 1 hour in summer; west of 15° east add 4 minutes per degree of longitude; over the year it also varies by up to 16 minutes (equation of time). For outdoors use hardwood or acrylic and varnish it.
