Block and tackle with pulley blocks

Preview of the CNC template “Block and tackle with pulley blocks”

Two pulley blocks with one or two sheaves each, made of three glued discs: with two sheaves you need only half the force, with four only a quarter, but four times as much rope. For measuring with a spring scale.

Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
1Beech dowel rod 8 mm
1Wood glue (water-resistant D3)
1Nylon thread or yarn

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. Mill axle and hook holes, then cut out sheave discs and cheeks.
  3. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
  4. Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.

Assembly and final touches

  1. For each sheave glue two large discs with a small one centred between them: this forms the groove for the rope. The sheaves must turn loosely on the dowel.
  2. For each block thread the sheaves onto a dowel and glue the two cheeks onto axle and upper dowel, about 1 mm wider than the sheaves. Hang the fixed block on a hook and the load on the loose one.
  3. Tie the rope to the fixed block and run it alternately over the sheaves. Measure with a spring scale: the pulling force drops with each supporting rope section, the rope travel grows by the same factor.
