Planetary gear to crank
Sun gear, three planets and a ring gear with internal teeth, plus carrier and crank: the ring is fixed, the sun drives, the carrier turns slowly with it. The ratio is engraved on the base; teeth and module adjustable.

Materials and accessories
| Qty | Part |
|---|---|
| 1 | Beech dowel rod 8 mm |
| 1 | Wood glue (water-resistant D3) |
Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.
Carving and finishing
- Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
- Engrave the ratio, mill the axle holes, the toothing with the 2 mm end mill, then cut out base, ring gear, gears, carrier and crank.
- Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
- Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.
Assembly and final touches
- Glue the ring gear exactly centred onto the base. Push a long dowel through the base (it turns loosely) and fit the sun gear tightly onto it.
- Glue three short dowels into the carrier, put the planets on loosely and fit the carrier so the planets mesh between sun and ring. The crank goes tightly on top of the sun shaft.
- Crank and count: how often does the sun turn until the carrier has gone round once? The result is on the base. If needed the number of planet teeth is raised by one or two so that three planets can be spaced evenly.
