Rack and pinion with scale

Preview of the CNC template “Rack and pinion with scale”

A pinion pushes a rack with millimetre scale along a guide strip: rotation becomes sliding, as in steering, drill presses or rack railways. How far does it move per turn? It is engraved next to it.

Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
1Beech dowel rod 8 mm
1Wood glue (water-resistant D3)

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. Engrave scale and text, mill the axle holes, the toothing with the 2 mm end mill, then cut out base, guide strip and pinion.
  3. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
  4. Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.

Assembly and final touches

  1. Glue the guide strip onto the engraved field of the base. Glue a dowel into the base as axle and put the pinion on loosely.
  2. Lay the rack between strip and pinion. Crank with a piece of dowel in the pinion as handle and read on the scale how far it travels per turn.
